Starting Work on my New Farming Game!
Dude, you are already living the life of a green king. Drop this painful process of creation before you get sick. Ask yourself if there is another way to survive without working.
Maybe a subtle shader on top could add more depth to the game? It does look a bit flat at the moment, as others have mentioned.
Please keep the town as a more realisticly arranged town. You could use it even further zoomed out like a map, with icons over the buildings of interest, and when you click on a highlighted shop you zoom in to that shop with a nice village corner full of life. when you want to go to another shop, click to zoom out again, zoom in to another part of town with a different shop. I think the graphics are so cute, you could really make nice scenes. This straight road with nothing but the buildings of interest is a bit fake and lifeless. Both Views are completely locked, the only camera movement is the one programmed in for the zoom(can of course be also a screen transition if you choose to make the map more adventure game style for example).
how is this different from stardew valley ?
Hi, love your channel and have been following your devlogs for quite a while! Regarding the inventory around the 12:00 mark, I think you should keep the inventory tab at the bottom. What you are doing now, is removing something, and then adding buttons to bring that thing back up again, which 100% of users will press 100% of the time, because everyone wants to compare inventory vs what to buy at a shop. It makes no sense to remove something and replace it with buttons to bring it back in, when those buttons will be used 100% of the time. I would advise to just keep the thing there.
10:00 Couldn't you just use a compute shader so there is no need for multiple textures?
Thanks
What is a cba file?
I'm so curious if sokuwan will ever be redone in a low poly art style in the future
the UI you were messing with I think reads way better. the contrast allows the icons to pop more with the dark background :)
It would be nice if you could in future be able to buy your own store in the city so you could sell your produce there by yourself and you would earn more money, but it will take some time.
I really like the new UI idea. But I'd lower the padding all around and separate the menu, like in an old one, so that there is just a little bit of background visible behind it. The new UI just needs more breathing room. And top text and scroll bar are too big, as if they are created for a mobile game, I'd make them smaller. And after that, I think the second UI would be a clear winner between the two!
oh, and the background in the centre is a bit too dark, I think, it's too contrasty.
I think this is a BIG step in the wrong direction..
is it me or are your monitor color settings extremely saturated, for me the village colors look very pale. very visible from 9:17
I think it's more that my camera is saturating the colours a bit, so when I film my screen the colours look more saturated than they really are in the game.
The amount of progress since I last watched one of the devlogs, I wish I would make as much progress xp
would be cool if you could hire villegers to work in your farm while you do other things
@ThinMatrix did you do it in Java ? What framework did you use ?
What is our motivation to farm in the game? The gameplay loop seems good but I feel like if I don't have some driving force to keep farming I won't
I like the alternate UI. Richer colors, a little darker and cozier. The inset inventory feels cozier as well.
Hmmmm. Another idea for scrolling mechanic on the town screen, maybe add farms you can scroll to and sell some crops to other farmers for livestock, etc. Also, yea the back of the town needs some decorating if you're going to stick with the side-scrolling idea.
Looking good!!
I don't know if this might be out of the scope of what your looking for with the game but seeing some of the exaggerated tool designs I had the thought that it would be cool if there was a bit of a light fantasy theme to the game. Like there could be some variety to the townsfolk models with elf and orc type characters mixed in. Maybe late game there could be some magic abilities you unlock to boost your farm or turning your up to then normal crops into magical variants as kind of an end game kind of progression. Basically just kind of a fun added coat of theming to give some added flavor to the game.
The one suggestion I would make is keep the current idea but shift things out of being in a straight line. For example you could lay things out more dynamically but still have the camera flip between. Like you start on the entry screen from the farm. Then with the first click the camera goes down a curved path to the outskirts area with the upgrade shop. Then the next click goes over a hill to the town square. To switch to the restaurant area the camera could spin around to look opposite of the shops. Thin it zips off to the otherside of town for the farmers market area. I bit more work but I think this would give a more natural feel to the location and a bit of a stylistic flair rather than the camera just sliding to the left and right.
top-down town was miles better than this side-scrolling version. Having it top-down let you see everything at once but now you have to remember whats where and which direction to scroll
I would have agreed with you on the first version of the new format where he was roughing the idea out but with the version at the end of the video there are five screens to scroll through. There is the currently empty area on the left end, the upgrade shop area, the town center which has all the core shops, then the restaurant area to the right, and the farmers market area on the far end. That makes it fairly easy to keep track of things. Once further developed I'd guess it will be even easier on top of that as you just need to remember things based on what section of town things are in like these shops are on the outskirts, the shops are in the town center, the restaurant is on the edge of town, etc. Not to mention being all in a cycle-able row makes it quick and easy to just flip to the location you need.
The 2nd UI design creates a visual-logical link between the particular item you're viewing in the shop as well as the rest of the shop's inventory, which I think is better.
This town looks super cosy! Strech goal to have daynight cycle affect things in the town? 👀 I also think that alternate UI style is super neat, adds some contrast to the icons and the backgrounds, I'm a big fan!
the game is taking shape at a nice pace ^^ Not sure i like the "crowd" noise. Seems less chill. the alternative UI seems really good. <3
The close the the ground menu honestly feels generic for this kind of game, having to scroll through 4+ different windows to see all the menus is not very good UX. A clever top down solution would feel more consistent with the game and it would also mean you don't need to adjust the art style to just support the menu, they don't currently feel like the same game. Instead of removing the bottom bar entirely it might be an idea to show the necessary items for the different shops when you're in them.
I dont know if you share this opinion, but right now on my screen things look under saturated, but when you use your camera (not screen recorder) the saturation looks perfect. Maybe change your recorder settings or something to match what it actually looks like? idk, other than that, love the UI. Minimal, and really doesn't take away from the gameplay but adds onto it. For someone who doesn't do UI much you've outdone yourself on that! :D
The Artstyle and the new town reminds me of the cartoon "Bob the builder" from the 90s and early 2000's
I have total admiration and respect for how you started with an idea and managed to stick with it for so long, I keep checking on your progress since the beginning when you decided on the graphic library to pick, it was lwjgl if I remember correctly. You're fulfilling the dream of many of us.
HUGE TIP: Do all your UI design in Figma... my god is it wayyy better than any photoshop or ps-clone... So easy to group together assets and export all at once
01:10 AKA Classic 1900's industrial capitalism 😂😂😂
Nice video !! What is the software you use to create your 3d models and graphics ?
I like the newer design, personally.
this game is looking good!
Love the town centre, will the game have birds and rabbits that steal your fruit ? A scarecrow would help with the birds, but not sure what would help remove the rabbits
I love the new town and the different UI that you showed off. Great job, very nice work!
Don't love the 2D town - I know it is probably faster but feels less alive. Could you maybe make fake streets and building behind it so it feels real?
Great game for nft game ❤
What made you ditch the old city instead of just restricting the camera to a fixed position? I think the old city looked more lively and the perspective did fit the rest of the game realy well. The new city looks a bit unreal because everything is in one line. You could also go with the new scroll approach and make it a bit more lively with more complex camera movement instead of putting everything in one line.
Just throwing it out there; if you're considering future plans for home grown, perhaps a restaurant as a minigame or a expansion later that would allow you to convert your farmed things into dishes for a different money making method. Just to give a little different vibe to the flow. Farm and Feed if you will.
I love the second version of the UI! Feels more finished some how?
The game is coming along very nicely! Thank you for sharing the process with us.
